Miami Beach/FL Content providers, distributors, producers, brand ambassadors, techie innovators and industry influencers with a smattering of rainmakers converged in mid Miami Beach this past 19-21 of January 2016 for the annual National Association of Television Program Executives Conference, Exhibition and Marketplace.
The NATPE Confab originated 54 years ago in Las Vegas with a short stopover in New Orleans to set down in South Florida five years ago. Miami Beach is now described as “the permanent home” of the NATPE Market and Conference. A migration that delights the over 6000 attendees seeking a tropical respite from the snow and sleet blanketing the northern regions.
Attendance has ramped up three fold over last year; extending its reach from the Fontainebleau Hilton to the adjacent and equally breathtaking Eden Roc. The newly renovated Thompson Hotel, a mid century moderne icon rolled out the red carpet for the opening ‘Meet and Greet’hosted by the Greater Miami Visitor and Convention Bureau, Miami Dade County Office of Film & Entertainment and Miami Beach Film & Events.
The specter of Sinatra and his bad boy crew graced the Fontainebleau’s grand concourse with a larger than life photo exhibit and for those who wanted to take home a memory or two there was a hand bound Rat Pack memoir priced at $1500 large. Gift bag included. The Fontainebleau and Eden Roc’s then as it is today offers up chill worthy vistas of azure pools, around the clock revelry and an unobstructed pristine shoreline.
An all expense paid trip to NATPE was riding on a winning recipe for this year’s official NATPE signature cocktail. Donny Williams tweeted his au courant concoction of Mescal Reposado, Peach brandy, Blue Curacao, key lime juice, splash of cinnamon simple syrup, shakin’ not stirred. With fine wines and libations flowing freely at the Bleau Bar the stage was set for more exec’s turned out in Rag & Bone ™ than a finger lickin’ “Gigging and Grubbing” BBQ. The halls reeked of Creed ™, class and luxury.
Graham Winick, Film & Events Production Manager of the Tourism, Culture and Economic Development Office noted, “With dramatic and unwieldy shifts within the ‘Industry’, NATPE’s location at the world’s crossroads combined with the robust marketplace, insightful panels, the Education Foundation Programs and Writers Guild sidebars is increasingly more relevant”. Diminished support on the state level with a roll back on inducements and tax incentives, has not deterred producers. “Our state serves as a stand alone character, 365 good weather days and saw in 2015 the addition of one more state of the art studio featuring two fully operational 15,000 sq ft sound stages and 15,000 square feet of offices, editing suites and support rooms”, confirms Sandy Lighterman, Film & Entertainment Commissioner. In spite of legislative setbacks, the state of Florida generates a billion dollars in new income and production revenue a year.
Said Educational Foundation Program participant and Associate Professor at the University of Alabama Rachel A. Raimist, PH.d , “The opportunity for broadcast and media professors to engage with industry professionals at NATPE helps us deliver curriculum that is current while providing students with an insider’s access to internships and future employment. Within days after the NATPE’s conclusion Ms. Raimist was dashing off to a Sundance official screening of ‘Under the Gun” featuring Katie Couric. Her student, Miranda Danato interned on the Atlas Film docu drama as a direct outcome of the NATPE educational sidebar.
Under the leadership of the immensely popular, Rod Perth CEO and President of NATPE since 2012; the non-profit Association has experienced inimitable growth in the participation of content-centric sectors that are increasingly interdependent across every distribution platform.
“Our role historically and ever more so today, is to assure business is consummated in an open atmosphere where neutrality, diversity with an all inclusive world view can thrive. NATPE continues to forge relationships in various sectors where, the immediacy of today’s market allows the Association to be less transactional and more entrepreneurial,” confirms outgoing President Perth.
A notable new NATPE convert was Stephen Alayande Tolulope, from Lagos Nigeria . His company. Total Recall Media, attended NATPE to forge reciprocal relations, that included a full spectrum of production services in Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa and offering original content from day time drama to documentaries for distribution.
